Dr Kate Stone

British physicist, inventor, tech founder. Currently in Los Angeles.

I describe myself as a creative scientist — because we all fit in more than one box. I studied electronics and physics, which give my work structure and discipline; my true skill is creativity. Inspired by my grandmother who told me to "cut your coat from the cloth at hand," I creatively use whatever I find around me to solve any problem I encounter.

I founded Novalia in Cambridge, where for almost twenty years we have made everyday objects — posters, books, packaging, walls, floors — respond to touch. I have shared my work on the TED main stage twice, and I'm at my happiest on an adventure in nature, exploring mountains, forests and deserts.

Talks

For the first half of my life the thought of public speaking terrified me; my younger self would not believe I am now far more comfortable on a stage in front of 1,000 people than making small talk in a room with 10. TED twice (2013, 2018), SXSW, Facebook, Publicis, Virgin Group, the UN, and many more.

Adventures

I love an adventure, whether that is sleeping on the top of a mountain in the depths of winter, under the stars in the desert, or exploring the depths of my mind to figure out "what does it all mean."
